City Water Pollution

If you happen to live in a city then the quality of your water should be a major concern. Sometimes we take the luxuries in life for granted, like a clean glass of water, and never give them a second thought. Many city dwellers are under the impression that their water supply is among the best in the country. However, this is not always the case. The number of incidents of city water pollution is increasing each year.

One of the advantages of living in a city is that all the facilities are close at hand, take, for instance, dry cleaners. It is always nice to have your clothes clean and freshly pressed for that special occasion. Unfortunately, the downside is that several major cities have the highest concentrations of dry cleaning fluid in their drinking water supply. This has been linked to kidney damage and cancer.

Even in a city you are not safe from pesticides and herbicides. These have been used to such a large extent that they can be found in most household tap water. Would you be surprised to learn that in any single glass of water you have at least one pesticide and could have as many as seven? A study of a large number of major cities confirmed this, the worst fact to come out of the study was to do with infants. Baby's formula was being mixed with tap water with the result many children were ingesting four to nine chemicals in every bottle.

Where ever you walk in the city, there is sure to be a sewerage pipe buried deep under your feet. The odds are that this sewer system was built more than a hundred years ago, and was not constructed to handle the current population. Therefore, unless it has been upgraded, it probably is running at maximum capacity, what happens when it rains?

This extra water soon overwhelms the sewage plant, as their capacity is reached, they shut down the intake valves, this in turn causes a rise in the water level throughout the sewer system. Eventually, the emergency relief valves open and you have untreated human waste being dumped in the nearest river or waterway. Is your water treatment plant upstream or downstream of your sewerage plant?

A study focusing on a Milwaukee hospital showed that whenever the sewers overflowed large numbers of children came down with serious diarrhea. Even more research is starting to indicate that figures as high as twenty million people each year became ill from drinking water containing bacteria and other pathogens from untreated waste.

You cannot rely on the local authorities to be on top of these problems all the time. Therefore, you need to consider some form of a water purification system. Contrary to the popular belief, it does not need to be expensive. One of the best systems available is activated carbon filtration, this works in conjunction with an ion exchange and a sub-micron filter. One of these units fitted in your home will ensure that 99% of all contaminants will be removed.

There are many different models to choose from ranging from a countertop to a whole house system. Whichever you choose you can be safe in the knowledge that you have chosen the best protection from city water pollution for you and your family.
